We provide grant-in-aid to English Heritage (EH), the Government's statutory adviser on all matters concerning the conservation of England's historic environment.
EH not only records and protects England’s historic environment, it ensures that the public are able to appreciate and enjoy the historic sites in their care.
It is the largest source of non-lottery grant funding for historic buildings and ancient monuments, conservation areas, archaeological sites, cathedrals and churches. It is also responsible for the maintenance, repair and presentation of over 400 properties in public ownership or guardianship.
EH also for compiles and maintains the “National Monuments Record” (NMR), which identifies, interprets, surveys and records sites and buildings of archaeological and architectural interest in England and its territorial waters.

The past and future of English Heritage
EH was set up in 1984 under the National Heritage Act 1983.
On 1 April 1999 it was merged with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
The National Heritage Act 2002 broadened the powers of EH in two ways, allowing it to:

On 20 April 2006, English Heritage (EH) and DCMS jointly commissioned a peer review of EH (PDF 12kb).
The report has now been published. This is accompanied by English Heritage's Response, Action Plan and Progress Report. These documents are available on the English Heritage website.
