Human Remains - Case 110667

Question: Request for information about Aboriginal remains in the UK. Case Number 110667

The Department was involved in a scoping survey carried out in 2003, and information from this survey was reported in the DCMS publication "The Report of the Working Group on Human Remains".  This showed that - from the museums and organisations who responded to the survey - 18 institutions held a total of 382 sets of remains from Australia/Tasmania. Since then, a number of successful repatriations of human remains have taken place to Australia, so the numbers will be much reduced as of today. The link to the Scoping Survey is provided below. This goes into quite a bit of detail on Australian remains.

The Report is available on the DCMS website and the Scoping Survey: http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/publications/4553.aspx
