DCMS confirms board members
Peter Bazalgette and Dr Tracy Long appointed as non-executive directors to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport board by Jeremy Hunt.
Peter Bazalgette and Dr Tracy Long have been appointed as non-executive directors to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) board by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Lord Coe will also sit on the DCMS board.
They will join David Verey who was recently appointed as the lead non-executive director to the DCMS board.
Jeremy Hunt said:
“These appointments create an incredibly strong team on our board whose combined experience across a wide range of sectors will be of huge benefit to my department. Tracy Long has been a member of the DCMS board for some time and will continue to combine a detailed understanding of how the department operates with her wealth of knowledge from the business and media world.
“Peter Bazalgette, alongside his business acumen, will bring to the board particular insight into a broad spectrum of media issues. And Lord Coe’s sporting background and his current role as the Chair of the LOCOG board, helping to deliver the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, will provide a strong sport and Olympic focus.”
The appointments follow a cross-Whitehall drive to improve governance and overhaul departmental boards, bringing in more business expertise. In June of last year Lord Browne was appointed as the first lead non-executive director to the Cabinet Office board and has been working with Secretaries of State on appointing non-executive directors to their boards.
Lord Coe has been invited to attend DCMS Board meetings by virtue of his position as Chair of LOCOG. He will cease to attend the departmental board at the point at which he leaves his post at LOCOG.

There will be 6 DCMS board meetings a year.

Non-executive directors are entitled to claim £15,000 pa. Lord Coe as board member will not be paid.

The appointment process for non-executive directors has been run according to OCPA guidelines. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Tracy Long and Peter Bazalgette have both declared no political affiliations/donations.
