High-speed broadband no longer just a pipedream for residents of Birch Green.
On August 10 Ed Vaizey, Minister for Communication, Culture and the Creative Industries, officially switched on the first example of Vtesse Networks’ super-fast broadband service, in the village of Birch Green, Hertfordshire.
The new broadband service can potentially bring high-speed broadband to homes and small businesses in isolated communities across the UK currently unable to get a high speed connection due to being too far away from their local BT exchange.
These locations have been known as the ‘Final Third’ and only receive speeds of under 2Mbps. In future customers could surf at top speeds, with a 40Mbps connection. This will allow residents to use online services such as Directgov, NHS Choices and BBC iPlayer more easily, as well as to connect with others through social media and email.
This development is in line with the government’s plans to bring superfast broadband to rural areas.
