Olympic Velodrome up for RIBA Stirling Prize
London 2012 venue and Lottery-funded cultural projects in running for top architecture award.
This weekend sees the award of the 2011 RIBA Stirling Prize. The Prize is the UK’s foremost architecture award, awarded by a jury drawn from across the architectural community. Previous winners have included Herzog & de Meuron’s Laban Centre, Wilkinson Eyre’s Magna and Gateshead Millennium Bridge, all of which were funded by National Lottery cash.
Nominated this year are a wide range of buildings designed by UK-based architects, among which are two Lottery-funded cutting edge cultural centres - the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon, and An Gaelaras, in the UK’s City of Culture 2013, Derry-Londonderry - and Hopkins Architects’ Olympic Velodrome.

The award will be presented at a dinner held inside the 2001 Stirling Prize-winning Magna, Rotherham. The BBC Culture Show will broadcast a special episode announcing the winner on Sunday at 5pm.
