Lap Dancing Establishments - Case 101418

Question: Request for information regarding feedback received from a letter sent to Local Authorities regarding the control of Lap Dancing Establishments. Case Number 101418

In response the following letter was sent:

Some figures as a result of feedback received to Mr Sutcliffe's letter:

  • 117 Local Authorities have replied to the letter (approx. 30%).
  • Of 117 replies some 25% were satisfied with the amount of control provided by existing laws over lap dancing clubs.
  • The remaining 88 (75% of respondents or 23% of Local Authorities) wanted more control.
  • Of the 88, 90% (or 21% of Local Authorities) considered that these controls should be provided by the establishments being brought under Schedule 3 to the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982.
  • 21% of Local Authorities are therefore urging action by the Government.
  • 7% of Local Authorities thought that further controls on premises offering adult entertainment should be addressed through normal licensing or planning regulations.

    NB. The geographical spread has not yet been analysed.
