Sue Campbell re-appointed as Chair of UK Sport

030/09
13 March 2009

Baroness Sue Campbell CBE has been reappointed as the chair of UK Sport, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Andy Burnham announced today.

Sue Campbell has been chair of UK Sport since September 2003. The reappointment is effective from 19 March 2009 and the term will be for four years.

At UK Sport Sue Campbell will continue to lend her considerable expertise to the World Class Performance Programme supporting Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s elite athletes in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

She will also help UK Sport continue with its investment in world class sports events and its international work, as well as its role as National Anti-Doping Organisation until these responsibilities transfer to a new body by the end of the year.

Mr Burnham said:

“Sue has done a fantastic job at UK Sport – clearly illustrated by the performance of the British team in Beijing last summer - and I am very pleased  that she has agreed to continue as chair for another four years.

“The lead up to London 2012 will be a crucial time for British sport as we look to consolidate our place as one of the leading sporting nations in the world.  A top four finish at our home Olympics and being in the top two at the Paralympics are ambitious targets but I am confident that with Sue at the helm both can be achieved.

"A key priority for Sue will be to successfully establish a private sector funding stream for elite sport in partnership with the Olympic family.  This will be an important legacy for the London Games and I look forward to working with her on it.”

Baroness Campbell said:

“I am delighted to have been re-appointed as Chair of UK Sport at such an exciting time in our sporting history. World Class sport has never been in better shape thanks to the impetus and opportunity provided by London 2012.

“While I have no doubt this will be a rewarding four years, this period also brings with it a number of challenges. However, with the continued unprecedented support from the Government, the National Lottery and we hope now commercial sponsors, a board which offers expert advice and challenge, an organisation brimming with talented people and strong partnerships with everyone in the sporting landscape, I have no doubt that we will achieve our targets for 2012 and beyond.”
