Heritage Protection Reform: Ecclesiastical Pilots - Update
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport f has published proposals for changing the way in which the ecclesiastical exemption from listed building and conservation area controls operates in England.
The Ecclesiastical Exemption is an exemption from Listed Building Consent and Conservation Area Consent that applies to the main Christian denominations in relation to alterations to their listed churches. The review of ecclesiastical arrangements is an important element of the Heritage Protection Review.
As such, it has been agreed that a number of pilot studies will be carried out in order to assess the practical operation of HPR proposals in relation to ecclesiastical sites to inform the 2006 heritage protection White Paper and any subsequent legislation.
