humanitarian assistance
The Humanitarian Assistance Unit (HAU) coordinates support in the UK for people affected by major Incidents.
Our role is to
- ensure that the needs of people affected by major incidents are understood and properly considered within Government
- represent the government and explain its policies to people who are affected and their families
We work across government and with the emergency services, voluntary sector and other relevant bodies to:
- improve emergency planning for possible future incidents
- help co-ordinate the humanitarian response immediately following an incident
- coordinate support to people affected by major incidents in the medium and longer term
