Sport England, the Youth Sports Trust and Sports Leaders UK are working jointly on this programme, building on their current work within the area of leadership and volunteering.
What is Step into Sport?
Step into Sport provides opportunities for young people to gain experience of sports leadership and volunteering in their local communities, recognising the roles that local partners and national agencies play in this provision.
Who is it for?
It is for young people aged 14 to 19 years. It encourages them to undertake an involvement in sports leadership and volunteering that will continue in later life.
Step into Sport offers many benefits to schools, school sport partnerships, students, sports clubs and community organisations.
How does it work?
The Step into Sport Pathway:
- Step 1: Young people engage in a programme of Sport Education at school.
- Step 2: Young people move on to undertake the nationally recognised Level 1 Award in Sports Leader Award
- Step 3: Young people gain practical experience in volunteering through planning and running a TOP Link sports festival for primary aged children
- Step 4: Young people undertake accredited community sports leadership training and sport specific leadership training
- Step 5: Young people, supported by a teacher mentor, engage in a programme of volunteering in their local community
County sport partnerships help to ensure that volunteering opportunities are available, appropriate and of high quality.

UK Ambassadors
800 young ambassadors are being appointed to spread the Olympic message and ideals and to act as advocates and role models for other young people.
Each School Partnership will nominate two young people; one will be a gifted and talented young athlete and the other a young sports leader/volunteer. They will be selected from Year 11 but undertake the majority of their role in Year 12.
