All the Royal Palaces are held in trust for the nation by The Queen as Sovereign.

There are two types of Royal Palaces, ‘historic’ and ‘occupied’. We are responsible for their maintenance and management.

Historic Royal Palaces

These are the palaces no longer used by The Queen or members of the Royal Family. They are:

We have overall responsibility for the maintenance of the Occupied Royal Palaces. Management and operating responsibility was transferred to the Royal Household in 1991.

We provide an annual grant to the Royal Household for the maintenance of the Occupied Royal Palaces.
