In his speech at the Re-modelling Library Services Conference on 1 July Ed Vaizey announced that he will wind down the Advisory Council on Libraries

The Advisory Council on Libraries (ACL), which advised the Secretary of State about the library service in England, was The ACL is made up of senior librarians and non librarians with relevant skills and an interest in public libraries. The Secretary of State appointed the Chair and all members.

The role of the ACL

  • To advises on policy documents (including those produced by other government departments) and on the progress of policy bodies
  • To help make sure the Secretary of State is always well informed about the sector
  • To provide an external perspective
