advisory council on libraries

In his speech at the Re-modelling Library Services Conference on 1 July Ed Vaizey announced that he will wind down the Advisory Council on Libraries. This decision was confirmed in an announcement about the abolition and reform of DCMS public bodies on 14 October 2010.

The Advisory Council on Libraries (ACL) advised the Secretary of State about the library service in England. The ACL was made up of senior librarians and non-librarians with relevant skills and an interest in public libraries. The Secretary of State appointed the Chair and all members.

The role of the ACL

  • To advises on policy documents (including those produced by other government departments) and on the progress of policy bodies
  • To help make sure the Secretary of State is always well informed about the sector
  • To provide an external perspective
