national lottery shares 2009
Decisions on the future shares of National Lottery support for the arts and film, sport, and heritage.
You helped us decide the future of National Lottery support for the arts and film, sport, and heritage.
From November 2005 to February 2006 we consulted the public on the future share of National Lottery support for the arts and film, heritage and sport after 2009. It proved to be by far the most successful consultation we had run, with over 11,000 responses received, reaching many more people and organisations than before.
The summary of responses from the consultation and breakdown analysis was published on 21 June 2006 and is now available online.
After the analysis of responses, Ministers looked at the results of the consultation and took them into account in deciding how the money should be shared between the good causes after 2009 and what the policies should be on how the money is spent.
The decisions on the future shares of National Lottery support for the arts and film, sport, and heritage were:
- The Lottery shares for arts and film, sport, and heritage will be retained for ten years from 2009-2019.
- Concluded that there is no case for changing the current, population based, arrangement for Lottery funding for arts and sport between the home countries.
- The UK Film Council will in future take on all film funding from Arts Council England with the same budget (£3 million a year).

The new policies which the distributing bodies will need to take into account will involve the following:
- Increasing participation for those who currently don't benefit from the rich cultural and sporting life of the country.
- Inspiring young people. Awakening their interest and involvement, with an emphasis on activity and health.
- Involving local communities. Fostering local community initiatives which bring people together and enrich the public realm.
- Supporting volunteers who do so much for the good causes.
- Encouraging new talent and developing new skills.
