national indicators for local authorities

In June 2008, local authorities agreed Local Area Agreements (LAAs) with Government and their partners.

The LAAs include targets to improve public services and the quality of life for people living and working in the area. Local authorities chose up to 35 targets from a possible 170 (previously 198) in the National Indicator Set. The three DCMS National Indicators (NIs) are:

  • NI 8 Participation in sport and active recreation
  • NI 9 Use of public libraries
  • NI 11 Engagement in the arts

Data for these indicators is being collected via Sport England’s Active People survey.

(Indicator NI 10, visits to museums and galleries, was recently removed from the set. However, data will continue to be collected on visits to museums and galleries, and will be presented alongside the final assessment of National Indicators 9 and 11 in December 2010.)

Latest Release: 17 June 2010

  • The latest data presents estimates relating to National Indicator 8 for all 353 local authorities in England.
  • For county councils and those local authorities with boosted sample sizes, this data covers the period April 2009 – April 2010.
  • For all other local authorities the data covers the period April 2008 – April 2010, giving a sample size of 1000 for each authority.
