local government in sport

Local government contributes more than £1 billion per year, 50% of the total resources available to sport.

Working with Sport England, we support local government sports services, through:

  • Ensuring that sports are considered in local government strategic planning
  • Working with the Audit Commission to ensure sports services are included in their Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) framework
  • A self assessment tool for organisations – the Towards an Excellent Service  (TAES) programme, developed with high profile partners.

How does this benefit sport?
Regular auditing of local authority sports services should help focus resources on sport and recreation.

Sport and physical activity should now be playing a key role in the development of Community Plans.

Self assessment will help sports organisations to compete for funds and improve sports services by identifying priorities and measuring progress over time.
