What facilities are available for elite athletes?
The Government is committed to supporting our top athletes and acknowledges the importance of access to top class facilities and services to assist their training and preparations for international competitions. The establishment of these facilities and services within England is being taken forward by Sport England.
They have committed £120 million of Lottery funds to develop the English Institute of Sport (EIS), which is a network of nine sites around England providing over 4,000 athletes from a variety of sports with modern facilities and supporting medical and physiological support.
The sites have been developed following close consultation with the national governing bodies of sport and a number of sports are already benefiting from the facilities and services at these network sites many of which are linked to universities. Sport England have also invested over £135 million in the 2002 Commonwealth Games facilities in Manchester which will become part of the EIS network. The EIS network will consist of over 80 built facilities across the 9 regional sites.
